Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which details everything in women’s wrestling in the past week, beginning with Monday’s Raw.

Natty&BretHartWWE was in the UK this past week (they always seem to go there a week or two after WM), and it was on Monday’s Raw that the Women’s Championship match for Payback was announced:  Charlotte vs Natalya. However, an added bonus. Natalya will have her Hall of Fame uncle, Bret Hart, in her corner; a clear recreation of their epic moment at NXT Takeover back on May 2014. As for that evening, Natalya led her team, also consisting of Paige, Becky Lynch, and Sasha Banks, to victory over Charlotte’s side, which also consisted of Naomi, Tamina, and, Summer Rae.

Tuesday’s Impact Wrestling actually kicked off with the Knockouts Ladder Match, which was won by Maria Kanellis. A bigger story took place during that match, as Gail Kim was actually kidnapped by Rosemary and the rest of Decay, and as we all watched throughout the program, Gail was a bargaining chip for the demented trio, who wanted to face Beer Money for the tag titles. Regarding Maria, her victory makes her the official leader of the Knockouts Division, and I foresee a lot of messiness from this point on.chynaDX

Wednesday featured Nia Jax in action against Deonna Purrazzo, while Taya, Ivelisse, and Catrina made their appearances on Lucha Underground. However, on that evening, fans of wrestling (not just women’s wrestling) were hit with the terrible news that Chyna passed away at the age of 45. To say that Chyna had a legendary career in WWE would be an understatement. She made history at every turn; becoming the first woman to compete in the Royal Rumble match (a feat duplicated by Beth Phoenix and Kharma), as well as the first and only woman to compete in King of the Ring, become #1 Contender for the WWE Championship, and hold the Intercontinental Championship. WWE needs to put Chyna in the Hall of Fame next year.

velvet-sky-bull-ray-599x350SmackDown featured Natalya and Paige in action, as they defeated Naomi and Tamina. On the next day, TNA officially reported that Velvet Sky has left the company, doing so after weeks of rumors. Velvet participated at that night’s TV tapings, so we will see her one more time on TNA TV. Of course, Velvet’s departure has sparked rumors that she is WWE bound, and that she’ll align with the Dudleys due to her real-life relationship with Bubba Ray. Velvet has become the fifth Knockout to leave TNA this year, and it’s only April! Taryn Terrell left TNA in the first week of the year, Awesome Kong was fired in later in January, Angelina Love left in March, and Christy Hemme left TNA just days before Velvet did.

A new week kicks off on Raw, and will end at Payback next Sunday. Also, this Tuesday is the Sacrifice edition of Impact! Until then!
