Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals are off to a great start this season. They have one of the best records in the AL and are tied for 1st in the AL Central. They started off their week in Houston where they won the series 3-1. They played their weekend series in Oakland losing the series 2-1MikeMoustakasCenterPic

Mike Moustakas continues to be one of the most surprising players for the Royals this season. Two seasons ago he was demoted to AAA due to a .152 batting average at the end of May. This season he is leading the Royals with 4 home runs. Moustakas has been a great addition to the top of the lineup providing much needed power.

IanKenedyRoyals2The royals currently have one of the lowest ERA’s in the American League. Starting pitching was an area of concern when many people looked at the Royals this season but they have proved the doubters wrong. Ian Kennedy has been a huge surprise early in this season. During the off-season he signed with the Royals for 5 years and $70 million. Many thought that this was too much money for a pitcher that had a 4.28 ERA last year. Ian Kennedy had a no-hitter through five innings and only gave up one earned run in seven innings when he pitched against the Astros Thursday night.

WadeDavis2 Wade Davis has also been an important factor for the Royals so far. Davis is currently tied for the most saves in the American League. When Greg Holland tore his UCL last year Davis was moved to the closer role and has been dominant so far. Wade Davis currently has an ERA of zero and appears to be one of the best closers in baseball. Last week he was awarded three saves, two against the Astros and one against the A’s. Davis has been one of the most impactful players this season and being able to shutdown opposing teams in the 9th inning. He has been a big reason for the Royals success so far.

The Royals will have a much-needed day off Monday and start their three game series against the Tigers at home on Tuesday. The Royals will miss Verlander in their series next week but will face three good Tigers pitchers Greene, Zimmerman, and Pelfrey. If the games are determined by the bullpens the Royals will have a huge advantage. Their weekend series is against an Orioles team that has surprised a lot of people. The Orioles are currently leading the AL East and it should be a great match-up.
