Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Breakdown of the AFC West Match-ups

The AFC West will look very different in 2016 due to departures by many star players including Peyton Manning and Charles Woodson. The Chiefs will return many of their stars in 2016 and have one of the deepest rosters in the division. Kansas City would have likely won the AFC West division title in 2015 if it were not for costly fumbles by Jamaal Charles in the first game against the Broncos. The Chiefs should have a good chance of winning the division this season. Here is a breakdown of the AFC West match-ups.

Denver Broncos:

BroncosLogoThe Chiefs matched up well against the Broncos last season and I do not expect this to change. The loss of Peyton Manning should not hurt the Broncos because last season he did not play well against the Chiefs. In the two games he played against the Chiefs Manning only had 291 passing yards and had a 3/5 touchdown to interception ratio. The defense was the best part of the Broncos last year and should not be any different next season. The games between the Broncos and Chiefs will be determined by the defenses and I expect the games to be close.

San Diego Charges:

SanDiegoChargersLogoThe Chargers have not beaten the Chiefs starters since week 7 of the 2013 season. The Chargers beat the Chiefs in the last game of the 2013 season but the Chiefs did not play many of their starters in that game to make sure they were rested for the playoffs. The Chiefs have won the last four games against San Diego. The Chiefs defense was dominant in these games and in 2015 they did not allow the Chargers to even score a touchdown. The Chiefs defense looks like it will be strong again in 2016 and I do not think the Chargers have enough offensive talent to breakthrough against the Chiefs defense.

Oakland Raiders:

OaklandRaidersLogoThe Oakland Raiders made a lot of progress last season and Derek Carr appears to be on track to become one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. The Raiders lost Charles Woodson to retirement this year and it will be interesting to see how the Raiders defense adjusts. The Raiders have only won one game against the Chiefs in the last two seasons and Derek Carr has a career passer rating of 28.6 against Kansas City. If the Chiefs can continue to give Carr trouble then the Chiefs should be able to continue their winning streak against Oakland.
