UFC Fight Night 86 Review

UFC Fight Night 86

Zabreg, Croatia

The UFC made its Croatian debut with a heavy bang. Five matches were in the heavy weight division, including the main event fight. Four $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses were given instead of the normal Fight of the Night award. With the heavy loaded fight card, it’s no wonder two were handed out to heavyweight fighters (Derrick Lewis and Jared Cannonier).

Main Scorecard Review

The main event between Junior Dos Santos and Ben Rothwell was a 5 round one-sided fight with JDS ending with a unanimous decision. Despite the reach advantage Big Ben had, JDS was faster, landing quick strikes to Rothwell’s face and more often body. Any clinch attempts made by Rothwell, JDS circled away, always seeming too quick. In the second round JDS landed a front kick to Rothwell that sent him down, and he never recovered. Rothwell seemed lost and was slow to react as JDS continued raining blows to his face and body to take the win.

In the co-main event Derrick Lewis defeated Gabriel Gonzaga with a devastating blow where he finished Gonzaga on the ground late in the first round. Lewis was one of the heavy weight fighters to earn a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.

The fight between Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes ended when the doctors judged Blayes unable to continue. After big shots were traded in the second round, Blaydes right eye started closing. Before the third round began, the doctor stepped in to check Blaydes’ right eye. After he unsuccessfully passed the doctor’s sight test, the fight was called, giving Ngannou the TKO win.

The light heavy match between Timothy Johnson and Marcin Tybura went three rounds with the unanimous decision given to Johnson. Johnson controlled the first two rounds of the fight with Tybura rallying in the third. Tybura tried to take the match when he landed a dangerous high kick that clearly hurt Johnson. Johnson was able to hang on and escape the final round.

Even though Pokrajac lost to Blachowicz to a unanimous decision, he put up a heck of a fight. This match was full of back and forth blows as much as it was gaining position on the ground. Watching, the fight seemed much closer than the scorecard showed. Even though Pokrajac looked to have run out gas in the third round, he showed he could still take it on the chin.

How are they still standing?

Cristina Stanciu was defeated by unanimous decision in her UFC debut against Maryna Moroz. Stanciu opened both the first and second round on the attack, but Moroz was able to defend, counter, and ultimately take both rounds. In the third round Stanciu worked body kicks and was able to take down Moroz halfway through the round. Moroz attempted an armbar that Stanciu was able to counter with a reverse triangle choke. Moroz was patient and eventually slipped out while continuing her armbar attempt. Even though Stanciu was able to avoid tapping, it wasn’t enough to take the round.
