Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals began the 2016 season with a World Series rematch against the New York Mets. The game was close but the Royals won 4-3. The Royals lost to the Mets on Tuesday 2-0. They got back to their winning ways over the weekend with a series win over the Twins.

Omar Infante has been one of the most surprising players for the Royals so far. He has a .308 batting average in four games. It is still very early in the season but a healthy Infante could be a huge boost to the bottom of the Royals lineup.

Mike Moustakas is another player that has improved since last season. Moustakas has struggled in recent years with pulling the ball. Many teams would shift the defense and Moustakas often struggled. During the off-season he worked on hitting the ball to opposite field and he has shown considerable improvement. This year he is hitting second and has been able to hit the ball to opposite field, eliminating the shift. Moustakas’s improvement has been in the way he hits the ball and his work in the off-season has improved his game significantly.

The Royals are the only team not to commit an error in the first week of the season. The defense has always been great for the Royals but this season they have been exceptional. The Royals are arguably the best defensive team in baseball and their consistency has been a large factor in many of their wins.

IanKenedyRoyalsIan Kennedy looks like he will be a nice addition to the Royals rotation after pitching 6 shutout innings Saturday night. In his first start with the Royals Kennedy had 7 strikeouts and only allowed 5 hits. He was able to locate his pitches well Saturday night only allowing one walk and having a WHIP of 0.900.

The Royals rotation to start the season consists of Volquez, Young, Medlen, Ventura, and Kennedy. There are very few concerns about the Royals rotation this season and each starting pitcher brings something different to the mound and can be tough for opposing teams to face.

The Royals will play a game every day this week and will play in their first road series. The Royals will play a four game series against the Houston Astros, a rematch of the 2015 ALDS. It will be interesting to see how the Royals play at Minute Maid Park this year. Their weekend series this week will be against the Oakland Athletics. Last year there were some heated moments between the two teams and we will see if it carries over into this year.
