The Burgundy Breakdown

Welcome to the latest edition of The Burgundy Breakdown, which covers the most recent week in action involving the Colorado Avalanche.colorado

The week started in Nashville, with the Avalanche coming off a crippling 4-0 loss at home to the Minnesota Wild, who the Avalanche were attempting to catch. The Avs scored three quick goals in the opening frame, knocking Predators goalie Pekka Rinne out during the period. Nashville made things interesting in the second and third periods, but the Avalanche held on and defeated the Preds, 4-3. It seemed like the Avalanche would be back on track and would make this playoff race interesting. Then the next three games happened.

The Avalanche went to St. Louis the next night and completely fell apart. The penalty kill, which stood strong in the last two weeks, surrendered two power play goals en route to a 3-1 loss, the first time they fell to the Blues this season. The Avalanche returned home on Friday and fell to the league leading Washington Capitals. The team began down 3-0, but goals by Jarome Iginla and Gabriel Landeskog gave the Avs some hope. An empty-netter by TJ Oshie, who beat Erik Johnson to the punch, sealed the Avs’ fate. For Iginla, the goal was his 20th of the season; the 17th straight 20-goal season.AvsJaromeIginla

The Avalanche ran into the Blues again and were soundly defeated by a score of 5-1. The Avs lone tally was scored by Matt Duchene, and there was controversy after the goal was scored, as head coach Patrick Roy was not happy with Duchene celebrating his goal while the team was losing handily. The Avalanche faced elimination from playoff contention on Sunday, but the Wild losing in regulation kept the team alive, if only for one more night.

The Avalanche’s elimination number is two points, and their elimination could come tomorrow in Nashville. The Avs have lost five of their last six entering the final week of the regular season, which will see them in Nashville tomorrow, in Dallas on Thursday, and ending the regular season at home against Anaheim.

Until next week!
