The Blackhawks Backhand

The Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues will face off in the NHL Winter Classic on January 2nd, 2017 at Busch Stadium. It is the fifth outdoor game for the Blackhawks in their history. “It’s an honor to be selected as a participant in the 2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic,” President & CEO John McDonough said in a statement released by the team. “Playing the St. Louis Blues at iconic Busch Stadium is sure to add to the mystique of this intense rivalry.” The team took part in the Stadium Series game at TCF Bank Stadium on February 21st. They also hosted the 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field and a Stadium Series against the Penguins in 2014 at Soldier Field. The Blackhawks traveled to Nationals Park for another Winter Classic game in 2015. They have a 1-3 record in those games.

On Monday, the Blackhawks announced that rookie defenseman Viktor Svedberg has been signed to a two-year contract extension through the 2017-2018 season. Svedberg made his NHL debut on October 9th against the Islanders in Brooklyn. He was originally signed by the team in 2013 and spent the majority of his time with the AHL Rockford Ice Hogs. In 120 career games in Rockford, Svedberg has six goals and 31 assists with 14 of those points coming in 36 games with the Ice Hogs this season.

Several senior citizens got a chance to feel like professional hockey players when the Blackhawks staged a mock game at the Centennial Activity Center in Park Ridge, IL. The game was filmed as part of the team’s “What’s Your Goal” campaign and they wanted to make the game feel as real as possible. Jim Cornelison sang the national anthem and Pat Foley delivered the play by play. Coach Joel Quenneville dropped the puck and called penalties. Red lamps lit and a horn sounded when players pushed rubber balls into the net. “You’re never too old to pick up the game of hockey,” Quenneville says in the video.
