Into the Cardinals Nest: Who Should Replace Jhonny Peralta?

The Cardinals lost their shortstop Jhonny Peralta to a thumb injury that will keep him off the field for two to three months. This leaves Cardinal manager, Mike Matheny with the dilemma of who is the best man to take over while Peralta recovers. There are a few different replacements. Matheny could go with and the decision he makes here can help make or break the Cardinals early on. Whoever the Cardinals pick to play shortstop will no doubt have big shoes to fill but they do have a few big options available to them.

One option is Greg Garcia. In terms of offense last year, he underwhelmed with only 18 hits in 75 at bats, 2 of those hits were home runs and he had 4 RBI’s He’s walked 11 times in his career with 18 strikeouts. Defensively, he is not much of a threat on his own. In 34 chances he secured 10 outs himself while the rest of the time was helping others make plays. He had 24 assists in 2015. Garcia is a great team player but he is far from the best choice to replace Peralta when it comes to run production.

Another option is to let Dean Anna play at short. He only had one at bat for the Cardinals in the year of 2015 and it didn’t accomplish anything for the team. However, it is important to note how much success he had in his time down in the minors while playing for the Memphis Redbirds last year.  He had 80 runs and 121 hits. Three of those were home runs and he also had 44 RBI’s and 77 walks. On the field, he had 73 chances had assists in 52 of them and had 10 double plays. He is a better option than Garcia at short but he’d be the offense oriented choice. Defensively. Anna is better as a second baseman. He had 500 chances with 191 putouts and 82 double plays in 2015 while he played second base.

The best choice to replace Jhonny Peralta would be Aledmys Diaz.  He made a big impression in his time in Memphis. Over the course of his time there he accumulated 79 runs on 162 hits. He’s also had 13 home runs and 76 RBI’s On defense he has been formidable. He got 164 putouts, 296 assists and 64 double plays. If he can keep his errors down and carry the great offense that he had in the minor leagues to the Cardinals during the regular season, there is no reason he is not chosen as the replacement for Peralta.

Ultimately, Peralta is tough to have to replace this  early on but the Cardinals continuously remind their faithful fan base and the rest of MLB that they can make the best out of any situation and still come out on top in the end. The beginning of this 2016 regular season will be no different.   If the Cardinals make the right decision on who plays shortstop and play with the same dominance they did last season, they will be tough to stop regardless of whether Peralta is playing or not.
