Into The Cardinals Nest: Kolten Wong’s Re-Signing Will Be a Major Boost for the Cardinals

It is no secret that Cardinal fans really love their players, especially when they come through in big games with clutch moments. One of the most beloved players is the second baseman Kolten Wong. He’s known for plenty of home runs and his amazing speed when it comes to stealing bases. The good news for the Cardinals and their fans is that they will be able to see a lot more of him going forward now that he has signed on to a brand new long-term deal.MLB: OCT 12 NLCS - Giants at Cardinals - Game 2

Kolten Wong and the Cardinals reached a 5 year/$25.5 million deal on Wednesday with an option for an extra year if he wishes. This re-signing is very good news for the Cardinals after an off-season that was less than stellar and it will give them plenty of momentum as the regular season approaches. By signing Wong, the Cardinals have locked in and rewarded a good player who has grown into one of the Cardinals’ best players. With the 2016 regular season looming ever closer, this re-signing of Kolten Wong will give a major boost to the Cardinals through at least 2021.

The main reason this re-signing is such a huge moment for the Cardinals is that he has made a lot of strides since his rookie season in 2013. When you look at his offensive stats from his rookie year and compare them to the next two years it is a remarkable difference. In 2013, Wong only managed to hit the ball 9 times and he walked 3 times while only contributing 6 runs and stealing 3 bases. However, as his time with the Cardinals progressed, he improved greatly. In 2014, he managed to get 100 hits and 52 runs. He also had 20 stolen bases. 12 HR’s and 42 RBI’s. 2015’s 100 plus win season saw Wong get 15 stolen bases and 11 homers but everything else increased. He had 146 hits and 71 runs. Wong also had 61 RBI’s and walked 36 times. Kolten Wong has definitely matured into a serious offensive threat on the Cardinals roster.

Kolten-Wong2As good as he in on offense, Kolten Wong plays good defense on the field as well. It’s easy to see his improvement in the past 3 years on defense. In 2013, he managed a total of 22 putouts, 4 assists and 8 double plays. In 2014, he got 196 putouts, 273 assists and 70 double plays. Last year saw him get 312 putouts, 17 assists and 107 double plays. The only knock against him would be the 29 errors that he committed over 2014 and 2015. If he keeps his errors down, he will be tough to get past at second base.

In closing, Kolten Wong’s re-signing is great news for fans of the Cardinals and the team in general. As he has spent time in St. Louis, he has become better and better and the stats that Wong has accumulated over the course of his career make that new five-year contract is worth every bit of the $25.5 million that Cardinal GM, John Mozelliak signed him to. There is still plenty of time left in Wong’s career for him to improve even more in every aspect of the game. Thanks to this contract signing, Cardinal fans can watch that happen while he plays for the Cardinals for a long time to come.
