BREAKING: Nate Diaz replaces Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196

On Tuesday morning it was announced that Rafael dos Anjos was forced to withdraw from his lightweight title defense against Conor McGregor. This was met with seemingly every fighter in the UFC begging for the shot at McGregor and the huge payday that comes with it.

The list of fighters that publicly asked for the fight were Khabib Namurgamedov, Tony Ferguson, Diego Snachez and even Manny Gamburyan. Two favorites emerged to take the fight: “Cowboy” Cerrone and Nate Diaz. Ultimately, Nate Diaz got the nod. He will take on Conor McGregor in a non-title fight at UFC 196. The fight is sure to have a lot of tension after Nate Diaz had some choice words for McGregor after his win over Michael Johnson in December as seen in the video below;

According to multiple sources, dos Anjos suffered a broken left foot last Friday, forcing him to pull out of the lightweight title fight against McGregor. The Brazilian was hoping the injury would get better over the weekend but when it didn’t his team had to make the call to cancel the fight on Monday.

According to dos Anjos’ coach Rafael Cordeiro, RDA won’t need surgery on his injured foot at this time, however, he can’t put any pressure on it for at least three weeks.

“I am devastated,” he said, “because we were preparing well for this fight and we were ready.”

Weight was a major sticking point in negotiating the new fight, since the fight is only 11 days away. Diaz did not want to cut all the way down to the 155-pound lightweight limit. McGregor obliged and agreed to do it at 170 pounds. Therefore, the bout will take place at welterweight.
