The Blackhawks Backhand

chi_g_mhossats_1920x1080The Blackhawks placed Marian Hossa on injured reserve Sunday after Hossa suffered an apparent left leg injury in their 3-2 overtime loss to the Ducks on Saturday. Coach Joel Quenneville said Monday the Hawks are expecting Hossa out “a couple of weeks.” “Hopefully two weeks is probably what we’re looking at,” Quenneville said. Hossa fell to the ice after receiving a hip check from Ducks’ Hampus Lindholm. “It’s a good test and certainly you get a good look at some guys,” Quenneville said. “There’s great opportunity, power play, penalty killing, important minutes, defensive situations, last-minute periods in games — all quality ice time you want to have out there. Guys will be pushing for the opportunity to get it and hopefully they can take advantage.” With the news, the Blackhawks have recalled center Vincent Hinostroza from the Rockford IceHogs.

This Thursday, President Obama will host the Blackhawks at the White House for the third time. They earned another trip to Washington after they defeated the Lightning in June to win their third Stanley Cup in the last six seasons.

The Blackhawks will host the 2017 NHL Draft at the United Center. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz and team president John McDonough made the announcement last Thursday at the United Center. Chicago has never hosted the draft in the 53-year history of the event. It will take place June 23-24, 2017. “When we were getting ready to make the announcement and I was told this was the first time in League history [it’s been in Chicago], I said, ‘Please, go back and check, that can’t be possible,’ and it is,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “At the 2017 Draft, our 30 clubs once again will chart the course of their futures, but this time it will be here at the United Center.” Bettman said the dates of the 2017 draft are significant in Blackhawks history and that’s why they were chosen. Duncan Keith was awarded his first Norris Trophy on June 23rd, 2010 and his second on June 24th, 2014. The Blackhawks also drafted Jonathan Toews on June 24th, 2006 and they won their second Stanley Cup on June 24th, 2013. “With those highlights as the backdrop and this outstanding arena as the setting, I know on behalf of the entire NHL family, we’re all looking forward to being here for a memorable weekend in the Windy City,” Bettman said. “We’re excited to be coming here and we’re looking forward to the draft in 2017.”

Congratulations to Patrick Kane! He was the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft and he’s the first from his draft class to record 400 career assists.

Defenseman Rob Scuderi cleared waivers and will head to the Rockford IceHogs, coach Joel Quenneville said Wednesday. Scuderi was placed on waivers on Tuesday afternoon. “Organizationally we have some business decisions to make, player decisions,” Quenneville said. “So he’s going to go to Rockford and we’ll see.” The Blackhawks have $3.9 million of trade-deadline cap space, with Scuderi headed to the minors.
