First Punch

Considered by many to to be the pound for pound king Roman”Chocolatito” Gonzalez will defend his belt against Mcwilliams Arroyo.arroyomcjoe300nf1

This will be the third straight fight that Gonzalez fights on GGG under card. K2 promotions made it official friday announcing that they finalized the deal for April 23rd. The fight will take place at the Forumn Inglewood, California.

“Having Roman paired with Gennady was a winning combination in 2015, as both fought in front of huge crowds in Los Angeles and New York City,” said Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions. “Roman has a very fan-friendly style, and we’re pleased that following his HBO debut in May at the Forum, he was recognized as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter by most of the major media platforms worldwide.”

ChocolatitoGonzalezGonzalez (44-0,38kos) is a former strawweight champion and flyweight title holder and is looking to successfully defend his championship.”It is the best combination in boxing having the two best pound-for-pound fighters on the same show,” Loeffler said. “It’s win-win since Roman got more publicity in the last two GGG shows than he had previously in his career, and HBO and the fans get the excitement that he brings into the ring with every fight. He is at a completely different marketing level now that he has fought twice on the HBO platform.”

Gonzalez is 28 and is compared often to pound for pound to the great Manny Pacquiao. “I want to thank God, (co-promoter) Teiken Promotions, especially my father (figure, Teiken chief) Mr. (Akihiko) Honda, HBO, K2 Promotions, and my family, and my team for helping me once again obtain the opportunity to fight representing my country and my fans,” he said.

Arroyo(16-2,14Kos) is 30 years old and is excited for a chance to knockoff Gonzalez and win the WBC flyweight championship.”I am very happy with this opportunity to fight for the world title again,” Arroyo said. “We were confident that this fight would come, and now is the time to continue training to bring this title to Puerto Rico. We know that Roman Gonzalez is a great fighter, one of the best today, and we will get in the best condition to win that belt.” Arroyo has a twin brother who won a world championship last year and he hopes to join him in that club April 23rd.”It is our dream to be world champions, my brother and I, and I know we will get it done,” he said.  Loeffler: “McWilliams Arroyo brings a great deal of confidence and skill into this battle, wanting to join his brother McJoe as a world champion.”

Second Punch

JuanManuelMarquez43Four time division champion Juan Manuel Marquez said Thursday that he and his camp are working out a deal to fight Miguel Cotto. The fight will most likely take place at 147 pounds or a catch weight at 150 if it happens.  Bob Arum claims that he still has a contract with the 42 year old Marquez and is awaiting the word on his comeback.”Yes, [we have a contract] and when he comes back we’ll talk with Fernando Beltran [of Zanfer Promotions] and agree to fights with him,” Arum said. “I don’t want to put pressure on [Marquez] to return, but if he wants to come back we’ll cooperate with him on future fights.”

Marquez claims that his comeback will be announced in mid- March and he wants to fight in Mexico City in May. “I talked to Cotto’s people and told them about my situation and what I want, and they are willing to cooperate,” Marquez said. “It appears that Cotto wants to fight in June and I want to fight in May because two years of inactivity is a very important factor. I have to get on pace with a fight in May and then why not consider a fight with Cotto in September or October?”

MiguelCottoCotto has shown interest in the fight and it can happen depending on how well Marquez’s camp negotiates with  Roc Nation Sports.  Cotto has been with Roc Nation Sports since March 2015 and they have helped rejuvenate his career. “We’re watching and waiting, the doctor [Miguel Angel Mancera] is interested and it’s important,” Marquez said. “I need to make a decision and a professional decision, I need to get to 100 percent. We don’t have much time to decide. I trained yesterday. I’m sore, but my body is responding well, and if we fight in May, we can announce it in March.”
