Shooting With the Spurs

The 2nd Half

The San Antonio Spurs are having one of the better seasons in the National Basketball Association, by posting a 45-8 record. 45 wins at the All-Star break would normally be a 1st place like record, but the Golden State Warriors have taken a Lee Corso stance in the Western Conference and said “Not so fast.” The Warriors have a 3.5 game lead over the Spurs. After the All-Star break these two teams play each other 3 more times. The N.B.A. Western conference is a two team battle, and the second half of the season will show why the Spurs are contenders.
BobanMarjanovicCoach Popovich is infamously known around the basketball world that he is not afraid to rest his players. This is in part because of how deep this years team is. Off-season additions included All-Star power forward LeMarcus Aldridge, and power forward Davis West, which have really rounded out the Spurs. Time Duncan no longer has to play every night with the emergence of center Boban Marjanovic. Marjanovic has only played 9 minutes a game since Duncan has been out with Knee soreness, but those 9 minutes have proven effective. Boban is averaging right at 6 points, 4 rebounds, and shot nearly 67% from the field in those few minutes. If this trend can continue the Spurs have a player that can come off their bench for those crucial playoff minutes.Leonard_Kawhi

San Antonio fans can expect a strong push for the number one overall seed for the NBA playoffs. Why? Remember the Warriors visit the AT&T Center twice in the remaining games. The Spurs will be well rested and healthy the rest of the season. Kawhi Leonard has been outstanding. Expect him to continue his 20.2 Points per game season, and add on a few more assists per game to help get players like Aldridge, more open looks, closer to the basket. David West has yet to play up to his potential. Expect West to see more minutes after the break to give Aldridge rest. Popovich has several options at guard, while Patty Mills and Tony Parker have been splitting minutes, same goes for Danny Green and Manu Ginobili, but production is close to the same with both sets of guards. Spurs fans look to see Popovich continue this trend till playoff time.
gregPopovichThe Spurs are contenders who are expected to finish 2nd in the NBA. Western conference. Here are a few stats that could sway into the finish of the season. San Antonio has the number one defense in the NBA holding opponents to just 91.8 points per game. While their counterpart Golden State Warriors are giving up 103.00 points per game, which is 20th in the NBA. Rebounding is a strength for the Spurs as well ranking in the top ten in the NBA with 44.6, of those 44 rebounds a game, and almost 80% of them are defensive which is best in the western conference. San Antonio has an advantage on the defensive rebound category that no other team in the western conference has. In the remaining match ups between the Spurs and the Warriors will be won or lost on the Glass. Spurs win the western conference if: they can grab their .797% defensive rebounds and keep the Warriors and splash brother tandem of Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry, both of whom competed in this past weekend’s All-Star Foot Locker 3point shooting contest, to a minimum. How does this happen, remember the rested players, well the Warriors love to score. For the Spurs to match Golden State’s offensive, your legs must be fresh, your bench ready, and your defense playing physical, causing turnovers, and limit transition baskets by reducing turnovers on offense by passing the basketball for the open shot.
San Antonio Spurs fans, you all should be overall impressed with what your team has accomplished thus far. Two players from the organization made the All-Star team. 45 wins which is normally a lock for a one seed. Then you have this exceptional year, a year in which you could see the 72 win mark eclipsed this season. A season in which a number one team fired its coach mid-season (Blatt), Derek Fisher was ousted as New York Knicks head coach, and Steve Kerr and Kidd missed games with significant injuries of there own. Spurs fans get ready for a shootout second half of the NBA season.
