Wrigley Weekly Wrap-up

Jason Heyward arrived 10 days early for spring training. The Cubs aren’t supposed to report until February 20th, but it looks like Heyward was too eager to get started. On Wednesday, he arrived to Mesa, put on his new cubbie blue gear, and took the field. Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer predicted during the Cubs Convention that players would arrive early in anticipation for the new season. The Cubs have yet to commit to Heyward in either center or right field, but he was in center on Wednesday. The Cubs’ first spring training game is March 3rd. Take a look at Jason Heyward taking batting practice and get excited for the upcoming season!

The Cubs have claimed left-handed reliever C.J. Riefenhauser off waivers from the Orioles and designated reliever Edgar Olmos for assignment. Riefenhauser has pitched the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, going 1-0 with a 6.30 ERA in 24 relief appearances. He was traded twice this off-season, first to the Mariners and then to the Orioles, before being designated for assignment. Olmos was designated for assignment by the Cubs for the second time this off-season.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says the Cubs will get an All-Star Game soon. “It makes sense the Cubs get an opportunity ahead after the new renovations are complete,” Manfred said. “This will provide the Cubs and Ricketts family a chance to showcase the unbelievable renovation they are in the midst of doing for Wrigley field. Timing-wise we have the schedule of cities set through Washington (2018). We will have an open and complete competition for the All Star Game beyond that time.” The Cubs appear to have three more years of work to do. That would put them in line for the All-Star Game in 2019 or 2020. They originally thought the renovation would be complete by 2017. With city issues and weather constraints beyond their control, the renovation became a five-year off-season project and $600 million payout.
