Avs Win 4th Straight Behind 2 Shorthanded Goals

The Colorado Avalanche just came off a 2-1 shootout victory over the St. Louis Blues at home on Friday, but the squad got right back to work on Saturday, as they headed on the road to face off against the Dallas Stars. This was only the second meeting between the Avs and Stars, and the first since all the way back on October 10, when the Avs picked up their first win of the season by a score of 6-3.WideAvsLogo

Semyon Varlamov was put to work early as he stopped ten shots in the first period. The Avalanche had trouble getting shots themselves, but interestingly enough, with the Stars on the power play, Carl Soderberg took possession of the puck and put it in to give the Avs a 1-0 lead after the first period. The second period was full of power play chances for Dallas, and in the frame, Jason Demers finally capitalized with the man advantage with a goal to tie the game. After the goal, the Avalanche were shorthanded again with a double-minor power play, but during the four minutes, Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog broke away and gave the Avalanche the lead; scoring the team’s second shorthanded goal of the game.Avs25

The Stars continued shooting relentlessly in the remainder of the second and into the third, but Varlamov stopped every chance Dallas had. In the third frame, Mikhail Grigorenko scored off a rebound to give the Avs a 3-1 lead, and Varlamov shut the door the rest of the way to clinch the Avs’ fourth straight victory.

Before the Avs took the ice in Dallas, the Minnesota Wild fell to the San Jose Sharks, 4-3, so the Avs’ win moved them past the Wild and into fourth place in the Central Division. The Avalanche are also in the 1st Wild Card position, leading the Wild by one point. The win was Colorado’s twelfth against the Central Division (12-3-1), and they are 6-1-1 against the top three teams in the Central (Blackhawks, Stars, and Blues). The Avs are a combined 17-7-2 in the months of December and January.

The Avalanche’s brief road trip will continue on Tuesday, as they will head to the Bay Area to face off against the Sharks.
