Avalanche Reach Shootout and Defeat Blues

Toronto Maple Leafs v Colorado AvalancheFor the first time this season, the Colorado Avalanche went past overtime and participated in a shootout; the last team this season to finally do so. In the shootout, Gabriel Landeskog scored the only goal and Semyon Varlamov stopped attempts from Alexander Steen, Vladimir Tarasenko (which had to be reviewed), and Troy Brouwer to give the Avs a 2-1 victory at home on Friday.

After a scoreless first period, the Avalanche ended up behind in the second when Steen put one in past Varlamov to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. The Blues were stuffed for the rest of the way by Varlamov, but on the flip side, the Avalanche could not capitalize on any of their key scoring attempts. However, with Varlamov pulled and the extra attacker on the ice, Nathan MacKinnon netted his 16th goal of the season to tie the game with 53.7 seconds left in regulation, with Matt Duchene and Tyson Barrie picking up the assists. The OT period saw key chances from both teams, and the Avalanche on the power play for the remaining 1:58 of the period, but to no avail. Landeskog’s goal in the shootout came in the first frame, and it held up for the victory.nathan-mackinnon-1-24

The Avalanche picked up their third straight win and have won four of five. This was the fourth straight Avalanche game to end with a 2-1 score, and the team is now 3-0 against the Blues this season. Friday’s game was the Avs’ last home game this month, as well as the final home game before the All-Star Break. The Avs will kick off the month of February with a four-game homestand, beginning on February 2.

The Avalanche will head on the road for three straight games, beginning with tomorrow night against the Dallas Stars.
