Tigers Open the Play-Off Window

The Detroit Tigers took a major step back in 2015. After four straight years of playing October baseball, the Tigers failed to make the playoffs last year. Detroit appears to be doing everything in their power to make sure that’s not the case in 2016. With the latest being the Tigers signing outfielder Justin Upton to a 6-year deal worth 132.75M.justinUpton

Upton is a 28 year old, who spent last year with the San Diego Padres, and previously played for the Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks. He had a batting average of .251, hit 26 home runs with 81 RBI’s in 2015, witch was good enough for his third All-Star selection of his career. His best year came in 2011 when he finished in the top 5 of the MYP voting. It is pretty clear that the young outfielder is in the prime of his career.

The Tigers now have one of the deepest lineups in the majors. This talented lineup includes names like, Miguel Cabrera, JD Martinez, Victor Martinez and now Justin Upton. All of these guys can easily hit 20-25 home runs and drive in over 100 RBI’s. It’s safe to say the Tigers aren’t going to have problems scoring runs next year.

ZimmermanDetroitThis is just one of many moves Tigers GM Al Avila has this off-season. Avila’s first big signing was top of the rotation starting pitcher free agent Jordan Zimmermann, who signed a 5-year deal. His next two moves were to bolster the bullpen, he did that by signing  reliever Mark Lowe and trading for closer Francisco Rodríguez.

Detroit’s stars are aging, Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera are both 32 years old and Victor Martinez is the oldest on the team at 37 years of age. So the Tigers World Series window coming into the offseason was closing rapidly, but all of these signings, highlighted by the Upton signing, is going to keep that window open for a few more years.
