Avalanche Ground Jets, Move Into Playoff Position

Fresh off a devastating near last minute loss in Columbus, the Colorado Avalanche went on the road on Monday looking to move back into a playoff position. Their opponents were the Winnipeg Jets. who the Avs have already defeated twice this season.avsVSjets2

The first period saw no goals scored, but the second period featured a goal scored by Carl Soderberg on a delayed penalty to make it 1-0. The assists were provided by Nick Holden and Blake Comeau. In the final seconds of the period, Jarome Iginla scored on the power play to give the Avs a 2-0 lead. Alex Tanguay and Soderberg provided the assists. Semyon Varlamov kept the Avs in the game in the third period, but with 41.6 seconds left, Joel Armia scored his second of the season to end Varlamov’s shutout bid and keep hope alive. However, Varlamov did just enough in the final seconds to clinch a victory for the Avalanche, by a score of 2-1. Varlamov racked up 37 saves in the Avs’ victory.semyon-varlamov

With the win, the Avalanche (23-21-3; 49 points) move past the Predators in the Central Division, and also moved into the 2nd Wild Card position. The Avs are also three points behind the slumping Minnesota Wild for fourth place and the 1st Wild Card position. The win improves the Avs’ divisional record to 10-3-1, which includes three wins against the Jets this season.

The Avalanche return home on Wednesday to face off against the Buffalo Sabres.
