Sony Open Week Round Up

It took 20 holes to crown a winner on Sunday but Fabian Gomez outlasted Brandt Snedeker to take home what looked to be a lesser version of the College Football Playoff Trophy. Fabian won in dramatic fashion though, and I’m not even talking about the playoff. He rattled off 7 birdies in a row en route to his second win on the PGA Tour. His other win came at the St. Jude Classic played at TPC Southwind. That’s another tight course that isn’t overly long. This sets up a narrative he’s a horse for shorter, tighter, courses with weaker fields. Too bad for Gomez there aren’t many of those tournaments on tour. And he may have punched his ticket to the Olympics in Rio with this win but I wouldn’t expect that tournament to work in his favor either.

Fabian had to knockout a Brandt Snedeker that let him back with a few missed 12-15 footers which are usually his strong suit. He also made a pretty questionable decision on holes 19 and 20 pulling driver on a par 5 that is clearly reachable with less off the tee. His second try resulted in a block fade on a dogleg left, absolute death. Fabian went with hybrid his second go round and turned the corner with a beautiful high draw that put him within range of the green in 2.

spieth-coca-colaMy pick to click, Justin Thomas, exited early on Friday after firing +1 so hopefully none of you took my advice in picking him. That just proves that anyone can win at anytime, just as anyone can lose at anytime (yes even Spieth). Speaking of Spieth, he’s the newest brand ambassador for Coca-Cola and the highest paid golfer eclipsing Tiger Woods. Pretty good week for Spieth and he didn’t even play. Must be nice.

Look for my preview of the CareerBuilder Challenge coming on Wednesday, maybe my pick to click will make the cut.
