UFC Fight Night 81 Preview

In one of the biggest Fight Night cards ever, a title will be on the line for the first time on Fox Sports 1. TJ Dillashaw will put his title on the line Sunday in Boston against former champ Dominick Cruz. In the co-main Anthony Pettis makes his return to the octagon against Eddie Alvarez.

Eddie Alvares vs. Anthony Pettis

Former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis is finally stepping back into the octogon after losing his title to Rafael dos Anjos in March of last year. At the time, Pettis was seen as one of the biggest stars in the UFC; he became the first MMA fighter to ever appear on the Wheaties box. It seems now, though, that Pettis has been somewhat forgotten about. He has battled injuries and has flown under the radar for the better part of a year. His opponent, Eddie Alvarez, has also been on the shelf for a while. His last fight was in June, a split decision win over Gilbert Melendez. After that fight, Alvarez decided to leave the Blackzillians and go back to Philadelphia.

Prediction: Pettis; TKO, round 2

I believe we will see “Showtime” back in the octagon. Pettis was a shell of himself in the RDA fight, he’s a fantastic fighter and I expect him to return to form Sunday.

Dominick Cruz vs. TJ Dillashaw

In the main event, TJ Dillashaw will put his belt on the line against former champ Dominick Cruz. Cruz has battled a myriad of injuries throughout his career. Cruz hasn’t fought since September of 2014, and before that he hadn’t fought since October of 2011. To say that Cruz will be rusty is an understatement. Dillashaw’s last fight was in July; a complete domination of Renan Barao (again). Dillashaw was involved in some controversy when he left Team Alpha Male to join the Elevation Fight Team. It is believed that the winner of this fight will face Uriah Faber, Dillashaw’s former teammate.

Prediction: Dillashaw; KO round 3

In my opinion, Dominick Cruz will just be too rusty to immediately step in and fight the best bantamweight in the world. Dillashaw is too much for anyone coming off a year lay off.
