Avalanche Fall to Jackets on the Road

Saturday in Columbus, the Colorado Avalanche lost a heart-breaker to the Blue Jackets, 2-1, courtesy of a goal by Jack Johnson with 1:07 left in regulation. It seemed like overtime was inevitable in the game, but Johnson’s goal sealed the deal for the Jackets, who swept the season series from the Avalanche.Chris+Wagner+Colorado+Avalanche+v+New+Jersey+Jl_EOH9ujCTl

Columbus scored very early in the game with a goal by Brandon Dubinsky just 58 seconds into the first period. The assists were provided by Ryan Murray and Seth Jones, the latter of the two acquired by the Jackets in a trade with the Nashville Predators. The Avalanche’s only goal came in the second period, Christopher Wagner’s fourth goal of the season to tie the game. Chris Bigras and Jarome Iginla assisted on the goal. Calvin Pickard was in net again for the Avs, coming off his first career shutout on Thursday against the New Jersey Devils. Pickard stopped 21 of 23 Columbus shots in the loss.

The loss coupled with the Predators’ 3-0 win pushed the Avs out of a play-off position, now one point behind Nashville. The Avalanche’s home meeting against Columbus also ended in defeat, a 4-3 loss on October 24, which actually marked the Jackets’ first win of the season. The Avs are 4-4 in the month of January, still on a big winning tear since December 1.

The Avalanche head to Winnipeg on Monday to face the Jets.
