Starting in net for Semyon Varlamov, Calvin Pickard stopped all 27 New Jersey Devil shots to pick up his first career shutout, a 3-0 victory for the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.CalvinPickard

After being shutout at home by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, the Avalanche wasted no time scoring in Thursday’s game, as the team’s lone 2016 All-Star, Matt Duchene, scored his 22nd goal of the season, just 51 seconds into the game. The Avalanche led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play, and the second period saw Tyson Barrie tap in a shorthanded goal after a 2-on-1 breakaway to make it 2-0. The game was clinched in the final minute of the third period, when Carl Soderberg scored into the empty net.

The Nashville Predators, despite an attempted comeback, lost in OT to the Winnipeg Jets, and the win moved the Avs to fifth place in the Central Division, and more importantly, into the 2nd Wild Card position–one point ahead of Nashville. The win finally placed the Avs at the .500 mark at home (10-10-3) this season, and ends a stretch where they played 11 of their last 13 games on home ice. Five of the Avs’ remaining seven games this month will be on the road.

The Avalanche will head to Ohio to face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.
