Sweet Chen Music. Marlins Acquire LHP to Bolster Rotation

chenFormer Orioles left-handed starter Wei-Yin Chen has agreed to terms with the Miami Marlins. The Marlins are adding a much needed upgrade to their starting rotation to complement ace Jose Fernandez. Chen’s contract is the largest free agent pitcher contract ever given out by the Marlins at 5 years/$80 million. It includes a 6th year option and an opt out clause after the 2nd year. The Marlins made no secret about their goal to improve their pitching staff in order to contend in 2016. Confident in their offense which will be led by MLB’s biggest power bat in Giancarlo Stanton, the Marlins wanted to assure that their opening day starting rotation is formidable enough to help them be in the race in September. With a healthy Jose Fernandez, the Fish believe they can compete against their more proven division foes: the Washington Nationals, NL East winners twice in the past four years, and the New York Mets, the 2015 NL champions.

heyweiyinWas Wei-Yin Chen the right pitcher to bring on board to help the Marlins accomplish this? This remains to be seen but they are banking on his proven track record over his first four seasons pitching in the States. Chen has a career 46-32 win-loss record with 3.72 ERA in MLB 117 starts. He logged in 191 innings while putting up a WHIP of 1.21 and 7.2 K/9 in 2015. Wei-Yin Chen was the best free agent pitcher still available on the market after the bigger names such as David Price, Zack Greinke and Johnny Cueto signed 100 million dollar plus contracts. The Marlins have put a disappointing 2015 season behind them and have their eyes set on a possible surprise 2016 campaign.
