Avs Blanked by Bishop, Bolts

Ben Bishop, Nikita Nesterov, Matt DucheneFive days before one Big Ben would enter the city of Denver, another Big Ben hit the Mile High City, and unfortunately for the fans in attendance, Ben Bishop shut down the Colorado Avalanche, stopping all 21 shots as the Avs fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0. The Avs were coming off a 6-3 loss on Sunday on the road against the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks, and didn’t fare well against last year’s runner-up team on Tuesday.

Steven Stamkos led the way for the Bolts, with two goals in the 2nd period. It was Ondrej Palat who opened the scoring in the first period, picking up a goal just seconds after the Avs killed a power play. Palat picked up three points in the game, assisting on both of Stamkos’ goals in the 2nd period. Vladislav Namestnikov also assisted on both Stamkos goals in the second period.

For the Avalanche, this was the fourth time the team was shutout this season, the third time at home, and the second time this month. So far, the Avs are 3-3 in the month of January, but the loss drops them to 21-20-3 this season. Ironically, the Blackhawks helped out the Avalanche when they defeated the Predators in regulation, keeping the Preds and Avs tied in points, with the Avs playing one more game than the Preds, placing the Avs behind Nashville in the playoff hunt. Avs have also lost back-to-back games in regulation for the first time since losing three straight in November 17, 19, and 21.

The Avalanche will remain at home on Thursday, as they will face off against the New Jersey Devils.
