Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which takes a look back at everything from the past week in women’s wrestling, beginning with Monday’s Raw.

CharlotevsBeckyLynch1The first Raw of 2016 saw the official end of the friendship between Charlotte and Becky Lynch. It was announced on the Raw Pre-Show that Becky and Charlotte would face each other in a non-title match; a rematch from their encounter on November 30, which started Charlotte’s villainous path. Charlotte protested the rematch, stating that she already beat Becky, but the two went at it in an encounter that, IMO, topped their match in November. In the end, Charlotte, and her two-time Hall of Fame father, Ric Flair, attempted to cheat to win, but Becky outsmarted Charlotte and got the victory. As expected, however, Charlotte completed her month long heel turn and attacked Becky, forever fracturing whatever was left of PCB.

The following night was the highly anticipated return of Impact Wrestling; their first episode on Pop TV. Regarding the Knockouts, Gail Kim teamed with Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne against The Dollhouse (in their first post-Taryn Terrell appearance). Gail, the reigning Knockouts Champion, filled the void left by the nearly eight months pregnant Angelina Love, and the trio defeated The Dollhouse, who later attacked the babyfaces after the match. Awesome Kong, who has also had problems with The Dollhouse, entered the ring appearing to want to settle the score with the trio, but instead, Kong laid out the two BP members, and attacked Knockouts Champion Gail Kim. After the attack, Kong established herself as the new leader of The Dollhouse, in what I consider the biggest twist of irony. Other than Kong’s past against the Dollhouse, she is not the type to really doll herself up, making this alliance very interesting.

mikeandmariaAs heavily rumored, former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis made her debut along with her husband, Mike Bennett, on Tuesday’s program. the pair were rumored to be headed to TNA after their ROH contracts ran out, and sure enough, there they were, with Bennett simply giving a promo and not wrestling. The couple appeared later in the week at Friday’s One Night Only:  Live PPV, with Maria at ringside watching her husband defeat Robbie E. I do hope to see Maria compete in the ring some day; she would be a great addition to the Knockouts roster.

CharlotevsBeckyLynch2On SmackDown this past Thursday, the evil Charlotte crossed paths with Becky Lynch again, this time with the Divas Championship on the line. This match was announced on Raw three nights prior, and was one of two championship matches on SmackDown, as part of the heavy promotion for the show’s debut on the USA Network. I myself was expecting a DQ finish of sorts, but instead, Charlotte cheated her way to victory to retain her title. Even so, we should see these two clash again at the Royal Rumble on January 24. Honestly, these two just find ways to top their last matches every time. This will be a fantastic rivalry, and I seriously see them pulling all stops should they compete on PPV.

Back to Friday’s TNA PPV. The event featured a #1 Contender’s Gauntlet Match featuring the Knockouts, and the match featured not one, but two new faces. Independent wrestlers Chelsea Green and Deonna Purrazzo appeared at the event and participated in the match, but both women were eliminated by the eventual winner, Awesome Kong. Deonna has been in TNA once before; participating in the second Knockouts Knockdown PPV in 2014. Since then, Deonna has been in demand; competing for promotions such as Queens of Combat, Ring of Honor, and even appearing on WWE’s NXT program. For Chelsea, however, this was her first TNA appearance. Chelsea is known for her 2014 appearance on Raw as the villainous Megan Miller, the woman who claimed to have had an affair with Daniel Bryan, and also for being a contestant on WWE’s Tough Enough in 2015. I seriously hope that Chelsea and Deonna’s appearances were not just for that night and that TNA signs them. They need new Knockouts on their roster. Badly. We can’t have Gail vs Kong Part 3000.AwesomeKong1

2016 seems to be off to a good start in women’s wrestling. We have seen a Diva heel turn, Kong joining the Dollhouse, one new Knockout and possibly two more, and a Divas Championship match. And that’s just within the first ten days! A new week begins tomorrow, and we should see the fallout from the TNA PPV and more from Charlotte and Becky. Also, WWE’s NXT program will be back after three weeks off!

Until next week!
