Duchene Nets 2, but Avs Fall 2 Hawks

The Colorado Avalanche’s lone All-Star representative, Matt Duchene, added to his point total with two goals and an assist, but it was not enough, as the Avs fell to the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-3, on Sunday.matt_duchene_by_vinyghot-d9462ow

It was all Blackhawks from the jump, as they scored the first three goals of the game in a span of 21:39. The goals were scored by Brandon Mashinter, Patrick Kane, and Marian Hossa, with Kane scoring the first of his two goals in the game in the first frame. Duchene ended the shutout bid with his 20th goal of the season in the second period, and later netted his 21st goal to make it a one goal game. The Avalanche would never get any closer, as Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Hossa scored in the latter half of the second period. Kane (2 G), Toews (G, 2 A), and Hossa (2 G) combined for seven points in the game. The Avalanche’s third goal was a meaningless tally from Nathan MacKinnon in the third, which was assisted by Duchene and Nick Holden.

The Avs’ loss snapped their three game winning streak, and pushed them out of a playoff position in the Western Conference. The Avalanche moved into the 2nd Wild Card position with the Predators’ 4-0 loss to the Coyotes, but the regulation loss knocks the team back behind Nashville; tied in points, but with one more game played than Nashville. The Avs are 9-3-1 against the Central Division this season, but two of the Avs’ four overall losses have come against the Blackhawks. The Avs’ will finish with the Blackhawks on February 2 in Denver.

The Avs return home on Tuesday against the Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
