Landeskog’s OT Goal Caps Avs’ Comeback Win

The NHL’s new 3-on-3 overtime was created to make the game even more exciting than it already is, and in Wednesday’s outing between the Colorado Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues, there was certainly excitement in the extra frame. The OT period ended with Blues goaltender Jake Allen caught outside his net attempting to play the puck, and after that, John Mitchell took possession, and passed it to captain Gabriel Landeskog, who put it into an empty net for a 4-3 win for the Avs.

Duchene opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead, but Tarasenko scored his 24th goal of the season to tie it later in the period. David Backets scored on the power play to give the Blues a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Fifty seconds into the second period, Patrik Berglund scored his first goal of the season, an unassisted goal, to make it 3-1.

The Avs’ comeback began at the 6:32 mark of the second period, with Mikhail Grigorenko scoring to cut the Blues’ lead to one goal. Semyon Varlamov made key saves to keep the Avalanche in it throughout the second period onward, and after Varlamov was puled late in the third, Nathan MacKinnon tied the game with 1:29 left in regulation.AVSNathanMacKinnon

The OT win put the Avalanche at the 20-win mark, and placed the team at two games over .500 for the first time all year. The Avs are now 2-3 in OT this season, with all five games played at home; they remain the only team in the NHL this season to not participate in the shootout. The Avalanche are now 8-2-1 against the Central Division this season, improving to 2-0 against the Blues.

The Avs’ homestand ends on Friday in an important game against the Nashville Predators. The Avalanche are two points behind the Preds for a playoff position.
