3 Impacts From Impact (January 5, 2016)

At long last, the first Impact Wrestling of 2016 is in the books, the first episode on Pop TV, and it was a doozy! Here are the three things that stood out the most on Impact this week:

  1. EC3-World-ChampionThe long and drawn out World Title Series that began right after Bound For Glory in October finally came to an end with the semifinals and finals. As a lot of us expected, Matt Hardy and Ethan Carter III advanced to the finals, but that would end with EC3 defeating Hardy to regain his prize and become a two-time World Heavyweight Champion. Honestly, I was upset that Hardy didn’t win. Matt Hardy never had his big moment in WWE, unlike his brother Jeff, and when he did get the title at Bound For Glory, he had to relinquish it just days later. I thought for sure that they’d have Matt get that belt back, especially with his wife, indy wrestler Reby Sky, and their son in attendance, but that didn’t happen. The only logic that could come from EC3 winning is if Tyrus turns against him and takes the title from him. Remember:  Tyrus won a title opportunity at BFG.
  2. awesomekong (1)The Knockouts were in action this week, with The Beautiful People originally set to face the Dollhouse. With Angelina Love 7 1/2 months pregnant, Knockouts Champion Gail Kim filled the void, and the trio emerged victorious, but it was what happened after the match that stood out. A post-match beatdown orchestrated by Jade, Marti Bell, and Rebel came to ahead when Awesome Kong entered. Now, I figured that with Kong’s past history dealing with the Dollhouse, she would rip their heads off. Instead, Kong attacked Madison, then Velvet, and finally Gail, and actually took her place with the Dollhouse! Wow! The story involving Kong was that she would retire if she didn’t receive a good enough deal from TNA. Looks like she got it. But Kong joining the Dollhouse is the definition of irony. This should make things very interesting, as Taryn Terrell’s void was filled in a huge way.
  3. mikeandmariaAs many anticipated, Ring of Honor alums Mike Bennett and Maria Kanellis made their debuts on Impact Wrestling, with Bennett revealed as “The Miracle,” sent to “save pro wrestling.” It was reported in December that Mike and Maria, who are married to each other, were rumored to be heading to TNA after their ROH contracts expired. For Mike Bennett, this is the biggest forum for him. Of course, many of us remember Maria for her stint in WWE, beginning with participating in the Diva Search in 2004, debuting as an interviewer in 2005, and competing in the ring for the next 3 1/2 years, which also saw her on the cover of Playboy in 2008. Maria has served as the villainous valet for Bennett since 2011, and I definitely think she’ll be a great addition to the Knockouts roster.

Those are the 3 Impacts from Impact! Until next week!
