Iginla Scores #600 as Avs Down Kings

Iginla600Goals2Jarome Iginla, at long last, finally reached the 600-goal mark Monday night, as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 4-1. Iginla’s milestone goal, which was his 11th goal of the season, was scored late in the third period; a shot that deflected off an opposing skate and in past Jhonas Enroth, who was in net for Jonathan Quick. Iginla became the 18th player to reach 600 goals, and the third to do so in an Avalanche sweater. The other two:  Joe Sakic and Jarri Kurri. Iginla’s 600th goal was his first since scoring in the first period against the Coyotes on December 27.

tyson_barrie_coloradoThe milestone overshadowed a huge game for defenseman Tyson Barrie. Barrie had a four-point game, scoring two goals and picking up two assists. He scored the first two goals of the game for the Avalanche; the first being a power play goal to make it 1-0 in the 2nd period. After Tyler Toffoli tied it with a PP goal of his own, Barrie scored again to give the Avalanche a 2-1 lead. In the 3rd, Barrie assisted on Matt Duchene’s team-leading 19th goal of the season, and of course, Iginla’s milestone goal later in the frame.

Monday was the Avs’ second meeting against the Kings. The Avalanche lost the first meeting, 2-1, at the Staples Center on October 18, and will return there on February 27 to finish the season series. Monday was also the third of five straight games at home for the Avs, and the team is 1-1-1 in this current stretch. After spending two months on the wrong side of .500, the Avs have been at .500 or better for the last two weeks, currently standing at 19-18-3 and 41 points.

The Avalanche face the Blues on Wednesday.
