Bucks Overcome Bad First Quarter to Defeat T-Wolves

For the Milwaukee Bucks it was good news that NBA games are not 12 minutes because if there game on Saturday night against the Timberwolves were that length the Bucks would have gone down in an ugly defeat. Luckily for them that was merely a quarter that the Bucks shrugged off thanks to three solid quarters to defeat the T-Wolves 95-85 Saturday night at the Target Center.

Mayo_EjectedThe first quarter was about as bad as single quarter in an NBA game can go for a team. The Bucks came out shooting horribly. The Bucks did not make a field goal until the game was nearly eight minutes old and they would only hit three total in the opening quarter in establishing a new low for the season for a single quarter. Adding insult to the shooting woes was the fact that the Greek Freak lost a portion of a tooth while banging his mouth either on a T-Wolves player or the floor. He spent some of the quarter in the locker room but he did return in the second quarter. Also OJ Mayo was tossed out of the game in the first quarter for picking up two technical fouls during a time out. He might be looking at a suspension as he had to be restrained by several Bucks coaches before finally being escorted to the tunnel. The Bucks would miss their first 11 shots, trailed by 17 points just nine minutes into the game and they would not hit a field goal until three minutes and 18 seconds remained in the first quarter.

The Bucks did seem to wake-up following the Mayo ejection and more importantly started hitting some shots. They Bucks shot just 3 for 17 in the first quarter but warmed to hit 10 of 17 in the second quarter. First round draft choice Rashad Vaughn was forced to play more minutes due to Mayo’s ejection and he responded in the second quarter by helping the Bucks get back in the game. The Bucks won the second quarter by 10 points to close to T-Wolves half time lead to three points. The third quarter would continue to see the Bucks play well and grab their first lead of the night. Greg Monroe was the key for the Bucks in third quarter. Monroe finished with another double double by scoring 19 points to go with ten rebounds.rashadVaughn

The fourth quarter opened with the Bucks going on an 11-0 run. The Bucks would never look back and led by double digits the majority of the fourth quarter. John Henson keyed the quarter for the Bucks. He made several nice play around the basket and on the defensive end as well. The Bucks bench deserves a lot of credit for this victory. Vaughn, Henson, and Bayless combined to score 32 points off the bench. They also came into the game at a critical point when the Bucks were behind and the three of them started working the Bucks back into the game. While the Bucks have struggled from three point range this season they were able to use it to their advantage on Saturday night as they outscored the Timberwolves were only about to shoot 3/14 while the Bucks were 8 of 16

The Bucks did not start the game off well in the least but the good news in a battle between two of the youngest team in the league is the Bucks took advantage of opportunities to get back in the game as they were presented to them as well. This concludes a challenging road trip for the Bucks with a 2-2 record. Not great but it might be a sign this team is slowly maturing. Tough games will continue into next week as the Bucks will still be facing the Spurs, Bulls and Mavericks. The Bucks played reasonably well for good majorities of this road trip. However small the progress may seem the Bucks are showing signs of growing up a little if you remove the ejection of Mayo in the first quarter.
