Avalanche Blanked to Start 2016

After a red-hot December, the Colorado Avalanche looked to continue their winning ways in January. Unfortunately, the Avs’ first game of 2016 did not end well, as the team was blanked, 4-0, at home against the Calgary Flames.AvsVSFlames

Dougie Hamilton opened the scoring for the Flames with a power play goal 7:57 into the opening frame, ending the Avalanche’s streak of scoring first in games. The Avalanche had scored the first goal in their last 11 games. Though the period only ended 1-0, it was all Flames in the 2nd. Goals from Josh Jooris, Matt Stajan, and Mikael Backlund made it 4-0 after 40 minutes, and the score held up after a scoreless third period. The Flames entered the game actually having problems keeping opponents from scoring in the 2nd period, but they outscored the Avalanche 3-0 on Saturday.avsVSflames2

The Avalanche are now 1-2-2 since winning six straight, though they remain at .500 (18-18-3). The Avs were blanked for the third time this season, and of course, the shutout kept Jarome Iginla stuck at 599 goals for his career. Regarding the season series, it’s split at 1-1, with the rubber game set to take place in Calgary on March 18.

The Avalanche will remain at home on Monday to face the Los Angeles Kings.
