Minnesota Football Coaching, Recruiting & Commits

Quick+Lane+Bowl+Central+Michigan+v+Minnesota+2iz9oNXgnirlThe gophers football team finished off a letdown season with a bowl game win in the Quick Lane Bowl on December 28th at Ford Field. The Minnesota gophers (5-7) beat Central Michigan (7-5)  21-14 to make it their first bowl win since 2004. The MVP of the game was Mitch Leidner he was 24-30 and threw for 223 yards and a Touchdown. Great win for the program due to Jerry kill retiring during the middle of the season and Tracey Claeys coming in as an interim coach then named head coach later on this season.

Gophers Coaching Hires

JayJohnsonThe gophers hired a new offensive coordinator (Jay Johnson) and offensive line coach (Bart Miller). Last year Jay Johnson was at Louisiana- Lafayette and ran a pretty good offense. He lead them for 4 years as a top 30 offense in the NCAA but last year he was in the bottom 80’s in offense ranks. This week Jay announced that he will be leaving Lafayette to become the gophers new Offensive coordinator. Bart Miller the new offensive line coach came from Florida Atlantic and a couple years ago Wisconsin, where he coached NFL players Ricky Wagner and Travis Frederick. The Gophers were in need of a offensive line coach because the gophers fired Matt Limegrover a month or so ago. The coaching staff of Wisconsin said this was a great hire and he will do great here.

Gopher Commits/Targets in All-American bowls

Dredrick Snelson WR (Under Armour All American Game) Dredrick had 1 catch for 13 yards nothing special but that competition was tough being the top players in high school.

Tyler Johnson ATH (Semper Fi all American Bowl) Tyler Johnson is looking great at wide receiver. In practice he is putting the top corners in the nation in skates. The game is on tomorrow night, so make sure to watch him as he could have and impact.

LB Carter Coughlin

Amir Watts DE (Semper Fi all American bowl) This player is a great Defensive end from Chicago, who is considering Minnesota. He has already visited the Minnesota campus calling it exciting and saying he loved all of the facilities. But, he will also visit Pitt, Nebraska and Indiana. This would be a huge acquisition for Minnesota.  In fact, one college scout called him the best player in the American Bowl going as far as to say he was unblockable.

Carter Coughlin LB (Army All American game) I think Carter is the best player in this recruiting class and will make an immediate impact now that he picked Minnesota over Ohio State and Oregon. He will be playing in this game next Saturday, make sure to watch this Minnesota native Hard hitting, great pursuit linebacker. And pray he commits to be a golden gopher.

Recruiting Update

Wide Receiver Dredrick Snelson Jr.

As signing day is one month from tomorrow the recruiting season is almost over and there is some drama going in the 2016 Minnesota Gophers Class. Long time WR commit Dredrick Snelson Jr. committed in August then he visited here in October. He loved it but after then he set up visits with UCF and Maryland it worried many fans. Now, he says he is only 60 percent committed. Only time will tell if Snelson stays golden. We will have to wait until his visits are complete until he decides. Elisha and Elijah Daniels DBS from Florida are long time friends with Dredrick and are Gopher Commits. Much like Snelson, they also have a Maryland visit set up in the next month. Many fans know and realize that the Daniels twins and Dedrick are a package deal. Now the question remains if the trio will stick to their original commitment or will the trio leave Minnesota?
