Nathan MacKinnon picked up his second hat trick of his young career on Monday, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 6-3 victory over the Sharks in San Jose.MacKinnon_celebrates_672x412

The 20 year old MacKinnon opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period; the tenth straight game that saw the Avalanche score first. The team’s joy was short-lived, as Patrick Marleau tied it up just over a minute later. The first period saw the Avalanche on the power play four separate times, scoring twice. The second goal was scored by Carl Soderberg, putting the Avs up 2-1 after 20 minutes. In all, the Avalanche scored four power play goals, with Blake Comeau and MacKinnon scoring in the 3rd period.

After Comeau deflected Erik Johnon’s shot to make it 4-2, Tomas Hertl (who was drafted in the same year as MacKinnon) quickly made it 4-3. After scoring on the power play, Mackinnon picked up the hat trick with an empty netter late in the period. Before MacKinnon’s goal, Jarome Iginla had a golden chance to score his 600th goal of the season in the empty net, but his shot went wide. Iginla did pick up an assist on MacKinnon’s first period goal.

The Avs’ latest road win placed the team back over .500 (18-17-2). The team has won nine games in the month of December, and look to make it 10 when they face the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks at home on New Year’s Eve.
