Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which details everything from the previous week in women’s wrestling, beginning with Monday’s Raw.

DivaoftheYearIt was a short week for the women of wrestling. The week began with WWE’s annual Slammy Awards, which is their equivalent of the Oscars. With the Miss Universe fiasco taking place the day before, I figured that WWE would take a shot at the slip up by Steve Harvey, and I was correct. Playing the Steve Harvey role was R-Truth, who presented the Diva of the Year award to Paige. Sadly, for Paige, she played the role of Miss Colombia and was told that she was actually the first runner-up, and that Nikki Bella, in the role of Miss Phillipines, actually won the Slammy. And just like the pageant, Nikki and Paige hugged before the former gave a wonderful and inspirational speech, with Paige standing next to her.
For Nikki, this was her second Diva of the Year Slammy, but her first on her own; she shared the nod with Brie Bella in 2013. 2015 was definitely Nikki’s year, as she spent most of it as Divas Champion. After winning the title at Survivor Series last year, Nikki successfully defended her title against Divas such as AJ Lee, Paige, Naomi, and Tamina, for 3/4 of the year. Nikki held the title for 301 days, eclipsing AJ by six days as the longest reigning Divas Champion in WWE history. She lost the title to Charlotte at Night of Champions, and lost a rematch to her at Hell In A Cell. Nikki has been sidelined since late October due to issues with her neck, and the recent report stated that she’ll be out until around early February.
beckyLenchEggnogEven the holidays didn’t save the fracturing bond between Divas Champion Charlotte and Becky Lynch. While Becky defeated Brie Bella without Charlotte’s villainous shenanigans, the next night on SmackDown’s live special didn’t go so well for the Lass Kicker. Becky was on commentary while Charlotte faced Brie, but during the match, Team BAD entered and decided to target Becky, with their attack involving the trio dumping eggnog on her. As for Charlotte, she saw what was happening to her friend, but instead of going out to help her, she focused on defeating Brie via submission. Charlotte even laughed a bit at what happened to Becky, so the wedge is growing between them.
The annual Tribute To The Troops event aired this past Wednesday, and it saw Brie Bella and Alicia Fox on the face side with Charlotte and Becky against Team BAD and Paige. Though, this event is hardly about good vs evil. I still remember 2010’s event that saw Melina on the heel side despite being a babyface. However, Melina turned villainous in time for the event to air on TV, so that made some sense. The event was taped two weeks prior to the airdate, which is why none of the champions, Charlotte included, had their titles with them on the program.chyna-600x359
Sunday was Chyna’s 45th birthday, but it wasn’t a happy b-day weekend for the former WWE Diva. Chyna was set to appear for Maryland Championship Wrestling, one of very few wrestling appearances for the former Intercontinental and Women’s Champion, but she had to back out due to an illness. Chyna’s last relevant wrestling appearance came in 2011, when she appeared for TNA as Kurt Angle’s partner against Karen and Jeff Jarrett. I remember that appearance, and I was actually hoping that Chyna would remain in TNA as a heel Knockout, if only for just a brief while, but her appearances ended with TNA’s Sacrifice PPV. Of course, had she remained in TNA, the evil Chyna definitely would have taken over the Knockouts Division and destroyed everyone in her path.
TT&DollhouseSpeaking of Knockouts Champions, former champion Taryn Terrell will reach the big 3-0 on Monday! Taryn can be briefly seen on the big screen in the comedy, Daddy’s Home, which has her as a New Orleans Pelicans cheerleader who takes a basketball to her face from Will Ferrell. Taryn is one of the long list of former Divas to become Knockouts, joining TNA in 2013 as a referee before she began competing. Taryn captured the Knockouts Championship last November when she defeated Gail Kim and Havok, and she would hold the title until August, making her the longest reigning Knockouts Champion in TNA history. Taryn turned heel during her title reign in April, when she revealed herself as the leader of the villainous Dollhouse stable, which has Jade, Marti Bell, and later Rebel as members. She has been off TNA TV for a few months, but in November, she has recently hinted that she could be leaving TNA and wrestling altogether due to her Christian beliefs. As of today, Taryn is still with TNA.
Tomorrow begins a new week, but with NXT and Impact in “Year in Review” mode, the only thing to look forward to is the growing friction between Charlotte and Becky Lynch.
Until next week!
