Avs Fall to Coyotes in Overtime

The Colorado Avalanche entered the holiday break coming off a stinging loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 21. Back in action for the first time since then, the Avs looked to get back on track at home against the Arizona Coyotes.

AvsJaromeIginlaThe Avalanche continued their trend of scoring first with Jarome Iginla’s power play goal with just under three minutes left in the opening frame. For Iginla, it was his 599th goal of his storied career, and it put the Avalanche up 1-0, a lead they held after the first two periods, despite close calls from both sides. Michael Stone tied things up for the Coyotes early in the third period, with the assists coming from Antoine Vermette and Mikkel Boedker, and that was where things stood after regulation.

The three-on-three overtime featured fast skating and many close calls from both teams, the closest coming from the Avs, with a shot hitting the post. However, the aforementioned Mikkel Boedker finally broke away and scored past Semyon Varlamov to give the Coyotes a 2-1 victory. For the Avs, the loss drops the team to 1-2 in OT this season, and they have yet to participate in a shootout. The Avalanche remain at .500 with a 17-17-2 tally, and finish at 2-1-1 in the four game homestand.

The Avalanche head on the road tomorrow to face the San Jose Sharks.
