Beauchemin Leads Avs to Their Fourth Straight Win

After sweeping the three-game divisional road trip, which included wins in Nashville, St. Louis, and Chicago, the red hot Colorado Avalanche returned to home ice on Thursday for the first of four straight games. The Avs faced off against the New York Islanders, who defeated the Avs, 5-3, in Brooklyn on November 30.FrancoisBeauchemin2

Defenseman Francois Beauchemin opened the scoring early in the first period with a goal to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead. Andreas Martinsen provided the lone assist on the goal, which was Beauchemin’s fourth of the season. Despite being outshot 14-7 in the first frame, the lead held up after 20 minutes of play. The second period had the Avs shorthanded for the most part due committing many penalties, and it would finally catch up with the Avs, as Brock Nelson tied it up in the second period on the power play. The stellar goaltending of Semyon Varlamov, who has been on a roll in recent games, kept the game tied.

The third period saw Beauchemin strike again, this time with a fluky goal that deflected off an Islanders stick to give the Avs a 2-1 lead. The Avs stayed strong even after the Isles had the extra attacker on the ice, and in the end, the Avs survived and picked up their fourth straight win by a score of 2-1.

The Avalanche’s winning ways in December continued, as Thursday’s win was the team’s seventh in the nine games played in the month, already making December the winningest month of the season for the Avs. More importantly, the win put the Avalanche at .500 (16-16-1) for the first time since October 16, keeping them further away from the Central Division cellar. The Avalanche are 5-7-1 this season at home.

The Avalanche’s home stand continues on Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers.
