UFC 194 Preview and Predictions

ufc194The most anticipated fight in UFC history is finally upon us. The world will be watching Saturday night as the biggest star in the UFC looks to unify his interim featherweight title against the only UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo. Conor McGregor is one of the most polarizing athletes in the world. Millions of people love him for his brash personality and lavish lifestyle; millions hate him for the same reason. This fight is obviously the biggest fight of the year, however the co-main event could end up being more entertaining when it’s all said and done. Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman are two elite fighters with top level wrestling and a solid stand up game to match. This could end up being ome of the fights of the year.

Urijah Faber vs. Frankie Saenz

frankie-saenz-ufc-fight-night-61In the featured bout of the prelims on Fox Sports 1, veteran Urijah Faber will look to bounce back from a loss to Frankie Edgar against Frankie Saenz. A win against Faber could jump start his career and put him on track for a title shot.  Faber has far more MMA experience (40 fights to Saenz’s 13) and I think it will show against Frankie. Faber by submission, round 2.

Max Holloway vs. Jeremy Stephens

UFC-holloway-and-stephens-split-ahn-PI.vadapt.620.high.16To kick off the main card, one of the hottest prospects in the UFC, Max Holloway will take on UFC veteran Jeremy Stephens. Holloway is currently riding a seven fight win streak with wins over Cub Swanson and “Cowboy” Olivera. Stephens, who made his UFC debut in 2007, is looking to heat up and make a run at the featherweight strap. A win would help a run get started, however I see this one going in Holloway’s favor. TKO, round 2.

Demian Maia vs. Gunnar Nelson

Nelson-vs.-Maia-Sportsjoe.ie_-647x330This is a fight that will showcase two elite grapplers. Demian Maia probably has the best jiu-jitsu in the UFC, but Gunni also has a blackbelt in BJJ. Nelson, who is currently ranked 11th in the UFC’s rankings, is poised to make a run at the title. He is 14-1 with his only loss being a split decision to Rick Story. This being said, I believe he will be outclassed on the ground by Maia. Maia by unanimous decision.

Jacare Souza vs. Yoel Romero

SouzaVSromeroThis fight will be for the #1 contender spot in the middleweight division and the winner will likely get the next title shot. Yoel Romero is one of the most explosive fighters in the UFC. He pairs elite wrestling with devastating power. Souza, the former Strikeforce middleweight champoin, is looking to add a UFC belt to his trophy case. He has a win over current UFC welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler. I see him winning this fight and cementing his #1 contender status. Jacare by submission, round 3.

Chris Weidman (C) vs. Luke Rockhold

ufcThis was the fight to make in the UFC’s middleweight division. This fight showcases two fighters in their prime. Weidman, the champion, is undefeated with two victories over the best fighter of all time, Anderson Silva. Weidman has been absolutely dominant in his time as champion. Luke Rockhold could be his biggest test yet. With wins over Lyoto Machida and Jacare Souza, Luke Rockhold will bring great wrestling and athleticism to the table. This could be fight of the year. I see Weidman coming out on top by split decision.

Jose Aldo (C) vs. Conor McGregor (IC)

aldoVSmcgreggorThis will be the biggest fight in the history of MMA. The world’s pound for pound best fighter, Jose Aldo will take on the UFC’s biggest star, Conor McGregor. Aldo has not lost since 2005, while McGregor has not lost since 2010. Both fighters are very skilled, however I don’t believe McGregor has been truly tested by a fighter of Aldo’s caliber. Mendes was dominating him until, on short notice, he gassed allowing Conor to knock him out. For this reason, I have Aldo by TKO in round 3.
