Bear Down: Gould misses Field Goal, sets up Torry Smith’s TD in OT

Robbie Gould is the all-time leader in scoring in Bears history, but he only scored 6 out of 12 on Sunday.chicago-bears-robbie-gould-kicks-fg

The Bears lost 26-20 to the San Francisco 49ers in OT.  Torrey Smith scored on a 71 yard TD pass in OT to seal the win.  It was one of his two catchers in Sunday’s contest.

Here is what 49ers Head Coach Jim Tomsula said after the game: “You get opportunities like that,” Tomsula said. “You got to enjoy them. That’s why they play the game. All of these players in the NFL are amazing athletes. Amazing individuals. You get in a moment like that. Enjoy it. Savor it.”

For the Bears, the offense couldn’t find a groove all day.  Cutler threw for 202 but had no touchdown passes and threw a INT which was returned for a TD.

For the Bears backfield, Matt Forte and Ka’Deem Carey each punched one in.  Carey scored in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter.

Robbie Gould missed a 36 yard field goal at the end of regulation wide left to end regulation.

That hurt deep down…..no doubt.

Robbie has missed several this season.  It may be time to retire the leg after this season.

Another reason the Bears dropped this one was the three and out to start the overtime period.

This 49ers defense is not that good and the Bears failed to take advantage with winning the toss as they went three and out.

On the first play of the 49ers’ second possession, Gabbert found a wide-open Smith along the left sideline, giving San Francisco (4-8) a surprising win over a team that had jumped into playoff contention.

Gabbert, who took over for Colin Kaepernick last month, completed 18 of 32 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 75 yards and his score.

A huge stat coming from this Bears season thus far has to be that Sunday was the second time in three games the Bears missed a chance to reach .500.

SoldierField2They also fell to 1-5 at home. Not good for a team in playoff contention and a loyal fan base like Chicago.

You would think the Bears would come into this game on fire after beating Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field, but the Bears played down to their opponents level.

Not much else to come out of this game. It was late game breakdowns from all three phases that gave the team another loss.  At this point, I do not blame you if you don’t want the Bears to win another game.  A high draft pick might suit this team very well.

The Bears get to play at home again next week as Kirk Cousins and the Redskins come to town.  The Redskins are coming off a tough loss to their division rivals the Dallas Cowboys.  Both teams are 5-7 and the Redskins are 0-5 on the road.  If it’s anytime for the Bears to win a game, it’s this week.

Lastly, Kevin White has been cleared. He now just has to get back into “football shape” and he could see the field this season.
