Avs Fall to Pens in Comeback Fashion

The month of December has been kind to the Colorado Avalanche this season, winning three of the four games played entering Wednesday’s home meeting with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Avs were coming off a 2-1 overtime win over the rival Minnesota Wild, and were looking to continue their roll against the Pens.

matt-ducheneThe Avs began the scoring with Matt Duchene’s team leading 15th goal of the season in the first period. Duchene, who provided one of the assists on John Mitchell’s OT winner on Monday, has scored 14 goals since November 1. The Pens tied it up with a goal by Matt Cullen, but defenseman Erik Johnson would give the Avs the lead again later in the period. The 2-1 lead held up after the first and throughout the second, and the Avs entered the third period on the power play, which later became a 5-on-3 power play, but it was killed off by the Penguins.

After the power plays ended, Beau Bennett tied the game with the first of three goals scored in a three minute span. Patric Hornqvist gave the Penguins the lead, and shortly afterward, Bennett scored again to make it 4-2. The Penguins won the game by that same score, and for Bennett, Wednesday marked his first career multi-goal game. Hornqvist racked up three points (G, 2 A). The Pens were riding a wave of emotions entering the game, as it was announced earlier in the evening that left winger Pascal Dupuis’ career was forced to come to an end due to health issues regarding blood clots. Dupuis played for 15+ seasons, but has been with the Penguins since 2007.

As for the Avalanche, the team is done with the Penguins this season, having lost both meetings. Avs are 3-7-1 against the Metropolitan Division this season, with the wins coming against the Flyers, Rangers, and Devils; all on the road. Overall, the Avs fall to 12-16-1 this season, and will now head on the road for three straight against divisional foes.

The Avs will head to Nashville to face the Predators on Saturday.
