Avs Win in OT in Front of Team’s Past Legends

avs-20th-anniversary-team-495x325Monday night at the Pepsi Center was a special night for the Colorado Avalanche and the team’s fans. It was the night that the Avs announced their 20th Anniversary team, which included past players such as Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Adam Foote, Adam Deadmarsh, and head coach Patrick Roy, as well as current players such as Matt Duchene, Semyon Varlamov, Alex Tanguay, and current captain Gabriel Landeskog. Former General Manager Pierre LaCroix, who built the Avs’ championship teams, was also part of the festivities

After the celebration, the Avs got down to the business at hand:  the second part of a home-and-home against the Minnesota Wild. On Saturday, the Avalanche were blanked, 3-0, in St. Paul despite a game effort by Varlamov. The Avalanche were looking for payback, and after a scoreless first period that saw the Avs outshoot the Wild, 6-4, Tyson Barrie opened the scoring in the second period with a goal assisted by Carl Soderberg and Blake Comeau. Zach Parise tied it up in the third period, and the game went to OT tied at 1. In the extra period, the Avs had a scoring chance right at the face-off when Mikael Granlund’s stick broke, but it was stopped. However, John Mitchell would score in the extra period to win the game for the Avalanche, 2-1.

The Avs are now 1-1 in OT, and handed the Wild their fifth OT loss of the season. The win improves the Avs’ record to 12-15-1 in the season, and 3-1 in the month of December.

The Avalanche will remain at home to face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.
