Monday Morning QB

GabbertThe fate of Colin Kaepernick’s future with the San Francisco 49ers was unclear until the news broke out that he met with the team last week. It seems like the door isn’t closed on a return to San Francisco, the team expressed it’s openness to bringing him back. But their new starting quarterback Blaine Gabbert has proven that the 49ers don’t need Kaepernick to win games. With his clutch performance in the 49ers’ 26-20 overtime win over the Chicago Bears, he’s shown he deserves to be the starting quarterback in 2016. Gabbert wasn’t perfect against the Bears; he played alright for most of the game. The special thing was he didn’t make any mistakes – no picks, no fumbles, and no bad decisions.

920x920In the fourth quarter, the Niners were down 20-13 with less than four minutes left. Gabbert took a sack on 1st-and-10 and lost six yards. With things looking bad for San Francisco, he turned it all around when he hit Anquan Boldin for 10 yards on the second down. On 3rd-and-six, Gabbert scrambled for nine yards and picked up the first down. Two plays later, he scrambled for seven yards on 2nd-and-10. The very next play after that, Gabbert ran up the middle, juked Bears safety Adrian Amos, sprinted for 44 yards for a game tying touchdown. Three awesome runs during one drive.

When the Niners had the ball in overtime, it was 1st-and-10 from their 29; Gabbert faked a hand-off, spun, and launched a deep pass over the shoulder of Torrey Smith. That was, of course, caught and ended up being the game winning touchdown for San Francisco.1066967_1280x720

Obviously, everyone saw that. Folks were probably shocked, like, ‘This guy’s taking off up the middle! I’m happy for him. He’s done a great job moving the chains and making plays with his feet. We always feel like no matter what the score is, whether we’re up or down, we’re able to make a play with him back there. He’s doing a great job.”

Blaine Gabbert may not be the franchise quarterback that the 49ers are looking for, but he’s definitely doing more than Colin Kaepernick was this season.
