Duchene, Avs Start December On a Positive Note

AvalancheWallpaper2After a November that saw a 6-8-0 tally, the Colorado Avalanche look to kick off December on the right track, as the team headed to New Jersey to face the Devils. The game was the Avs’ second in a four game road trip, as well as the middle game of a set between the NHL’s NY-area teams. The Avs fell to the Islanders in Brooklyn on Monday, 5-3.

Colorado Avalanche v Washington CapitalsThe first period saw no scoring and 10 shots each from both teams. Four of the Devils’ shots came on the power play, but all of them were stopped by goaltender Reto Berra, who was in net for Semyon Varlamov. The scoring began in the second period, as Matt Duchene continued his hot streak with a goal to give the Avs a 1-0 lead. The goal was Duchene’s team-leading 13th of the season, with 12 of them coming since November 1. The assists on Duchene’s goal came from Eric Johnson and the aforementioned Reto Berra. Four minutes later, Tyson Barrie put one past Devils goalie Corey Schneider to give the Avalanche a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Early in the third, Kyle Palmieri scored off the face-off to put the Devils on the board, but the Avalanche held strong and shut the door the rest of the way, holding on to defeat the Devils 2-1. The Avalanche finally reached 10 wins this season, as well as the 20-point mark (10-14-1; 21 points), but the team still have a long way to go to climb the ladder in the dangerous and loaded Central Division. Maybe this win on the first day of December could be the thing that begins the Avs’ road to contention.

The Avalanche head to Madison Square Garden on Thursday to face off against the New York Rangers.
