Avs Ground Jets For the 2nd time in 6 Days

Coming off a heartbreaking home loss to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, the Colorado Avalanche needed to bounce back on home ice once again. This time, the Avs faced off against the Winnipeg Jets, doing so for the second time in less than a week. It was on Monday that the Avalanche defeated the Jets, 4-1, in the final game of a seven-game road trip.

Comeau’s third tally of the season was a breakaway goal in the heart of the first, while Landeskog, the Avs captain, put one in later in the period. The opening frame saw no penalties and no power plays. Carl Soderberg put one in past Michael Hutchinson in the second to make it 3-0, but the Jets fought back in the second with goals from Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler. Wheeler’s goal was a shorthanded tally that cut the Avs’ lead to one goal after 40 minutes.

The Jets had their chances to tie the game, but the Avs stopped every single one. Chris Wagner’s goal in the third period gave the Avs a two goal lead again; Wagner’s goal was his second this season and his second in as many games. However, Jacob Trouba cut it to one again, and the Avs had to protect that lead for most of the rest of the third period. It wasn’t until Matt Duchene scored the empty-netter that the game was sealed. Avalanche picked up a huge victory, winning 5-3 over the Jets.

Duchene’s empty-netter was actually on the power play, keeping the Avs’ power play goal streak alive. The Avalanche have scored a power play goal in five straight games. The win moved the Avs to 9-13-1 and was the team’s second in three games–both were against the Jets. Avs will make their first trip to Brooklyn on Monday against the Islanders.
