The New Format to the NHL All-Star Game

nhlallstarlogoThe NHL All-Star game may be coming back to life.

On Wednesday, the NHL announced that it will abandon the draft style format and start a new format.

The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game will be transformed into a 3-on-3 All-Star Tournament among the NHL’s most talented star players from each division, the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and National Hockey League (NHL®) announced Wednesday.

The new format will divide the All-Star Game into three 20-minute games, with star players from each Division making up the four All-Star teams: Pacific, Central, Atlantic, and Metropolitan. The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star celebration will include the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition™ on Saturday, Jan. 30, and the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 31, where players will face off in a winner-take-all $1 million inter-division tournament.

The voting has taken a full 360 spin around as well.

The fans vote 1 player from each Division, regardless of position. Top vote-getters = All-Star team captains.  In regards for the rest, the NHL hockey operations will choose the remaining forty.

This new format is not the only first time thing.  The 2016 NHL All Star Weekend will mark the first time Nashville has hosted the NHL All-Star weekend, which will take place at Bridgestone Arena.

nhlJerseysAllStarI am all for this new format.  While the draft was fun for the viewers and players, it did not give the All Star game the hype of an All Star game.  All the mini competitions like the fastest skater or the breakaway challenge was what fans really wanted to watch.

The All Star game was always high scoring and low competition.  The NHL changed the format to overtime to 3 vs 3 and let me tell you, it is very fun to watch.

This new format will hopefully bring the hype and entertainment back into the All Star game and with the best three from every division, it is going to be fun to watch.
