Manning not Manning the Field

PeytonManning1Peyton Manning missed one full NFL season, in 2011 as he dealt with a neck issue that required multiple surgeries. In every other season since he came into the NFL in 1998, he has never missed a game.

That will change this week. The Denver Broncos are sitting Manning down and going with Brock Osweiler this week against the Chicago Bears. Coach Gary Kubiak announced the move at his press conference on Monday. Manning was coming off the worst game of his career and it was reported he is dealing with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot.

So for the first time, Manning has been taken out of the lineup in the middle of a season.

“All the attention is toward getting [Manning] healthy,” Kubiak said, according to the Broncos’ Twitter feed.

Osweiler has waited a long time to make his first career start. He has just 54 attempts in four seasons. Now the former second round pick formerly of Arizona State University, gets his shot. Which is very convenient for him, and possibly rewarding,  just before he is scheduled to hit free agency at the end of the season.

PeytonManningGaryKubiakThough Kubiak said after Sunday’s game that Manning would be his quarterback if he was healthy, Manning clearly wasn’t healthy in this past Sundays loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. It didn’t sound like Manning was happy to hear that he would finally be missing a start with the Broncos.

“I’ve never met a player who agreed to that,” Kubiak said about Manning’s reaction to the news that he was being sat down this week.

Manning has made 265 NFL starts and never faced a situation like this, being sat down during a season for an injury or any other reason. But, there are two sides to every story. The other side is he also has just nine touchdowns and 17 interceptions this season. But you are going to need another coin because has the worst passer rating of any NFL starting quarterback, and clearly wasn’t helping the team. He had a 0.0 rating on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs before he was benched during the game.

As hard as the decision had to be for Kubiak and the Broncos, it would have been harder to continue on with a hobbled Manning starting at quarterback this week.
