A Tom Thibodeau Return to Houston should Happen

kevinMcHaleThe Houston Rockets have fired Kevin McHale, the team confirmed Wednesday. Assistant J.B. Bickerstaff will serve as interim coach.

McHale, NBA Hall of Famer, was in the first year of a three-year extension worth more than $12 million that he signed in December.  He was coming off an 56-26 season where the Rockets reached the Western Conference finals for the first time since 1997

The Rockets were also sixth in the league last year in defensive proficiency.

Kevin landed the Rockets job before the 2011-2012 season.  He was 193-130 overall with the team, including three straight trips to the playoffs.

“The team was not responding to Kevin,” general manager Daryl Morey said. “There is no time in the West.”

David Morey is right.  The West is full of tough teams and you cannot afford to slip in the standings.  So why waste your time with an interim head coach when there is one of the best basketball minds on the market: Tom Thibodeau.thibodeau_b1_576

Tom Thibodeau was fired by the Chicago Bulls after last season.  The departure was bound to happen after a series of communication issues between him and the front office.  Many saw it coming and knew it would be last year in Chicago.

Thibs posted a .647 win percentage with the Bulls and turned them into a defensive machine.

It is time for Thibs to return to Houston.

Yes, return.

TTRocketsFor those who may not know, Tom Thibodeau was the defensive assistant to Jeff Van Gundy from 2004-2007 for the Rockets.  He helped the Rockets rank among the top five in scoring defense and opposing field goal percentage during his tenure in Houston.

After that, he went on to be the defensive assistant for the Boston Celtics and helped win them the title.

But why Thibs? He had trouble with the front office in Chicago…we don’t want a repeat in Houston.

I’m here to tell you that it will not happen.  Tom Thibodeau is a great basketball mind that can get the team back on track.  He is a defensive genius and with the right assistants around him, he can get the offense to thrive as well.

Thibs would be walking into a team just like Chicago.  He has the superstars in James Harden and Dwight Howard and the supporting cast of Trevor Ariza, Ty Lawson, K. J. McDaniels, Corey Brewer and rookie sharpshooter Sam Dekker.

Tom Thibodeau is just what the Rockets need if they want to get back to the Western Conference Finals.  Thibs breathes the game of basketball and is no question the top candidate for the job.  He has the offensive weapons and once he works with the guys on defense, this team could very well be the team to take down the defending champion Warriors in the West.

They were there last year, all they need now is a coach to lead them there and the Rockets should give coach Thibs a call.
