Bucks Loose Tight Game to Denver

KrisMiddletonBucksThe Milwaukee Bucks lost a roller coaster type affair on Wednesday night at the Pepsi Center by a score of 103-102. There were many huge momentum swings that had several lead changes in the final minute before the Nuggets prevailed as Khris Middleton’s jumper from the baseline rimmed out as time expired.

The first half was almost all Bucks and arguably their single best half of the season. The Bucks offense shot 70% in the first half and over 70% from beyond the three point line. They put up identical 32 point quarters in the opening half. Greivis Vasquez had all 15 of his points in the opening half as the Bucks went to the locker room leading by 11. A reasonable argument could be made that the lead should have been larger considering how well the Bucks shot in the first half.

The third quarter was a different story however as the shots that feel in the first half now were missed shots to feed a quarter that would feature an 18 point swing. The Bucks again kept their offense on the perimeter as the Nuggets defense tightened to close the gap and the Bucks did not attempt a free throw until into the third quarter. Meanwhile the Bucks defense slid to allow dribble penetration and was slow to close out and recover on open shots.

Jerryd-BaylessJerryd Bayless single handed tried to get the Bucks back into the game in the fourth quarter. Bayless had 14 of his 22 in the fourth. An emerging issue and potential long term problem area for this Bucks team is defensive rebounding. The Nuggets had 14 offensive rebounds including the biggest one of the game. A weak side rebound and subsequent put back by Kenneth Faried. The Bucks had one final chance but Middleton’s jump rimmed out as time expired.

While it is still early in the season, there are certainly some signs of trouble on the roster. They are ranked near the bottom of the league in defensive rebounding. They are also having a hard time getting to the line. The biggest concern is the team is not playing 48 minutes on both ends of the floor.

The good news is the Bucks have a few days to prepare for Saturdays home game against Cleveland but the fact remains the Bucks had control of this game on the road but they were unable to play a complete enough game in order to get the game closed out and come out on top.
