Celtics Use big runs to end Bucks win streak

The Boston Celtics used several big runs to break the Milwaukee Bucks four game winning streak 99-83 on Tuesday night at Bradley Center. The Celtics had long scoring runs in the first and third quarter to win the game going away.

BucksCoach&playersThe Bucks were held to their lowest point total of the season and a big cause of the problems can be attributed to their bench not being able to keep up with the bench of the Celtics. The Celtics had four players off their bench with a plus minus stat of plus 15 or greater. While the Bucks had three players off their bench at minus 20 or greater. While plus minus is not a good individual indicator of performance it does indicate how well individuals play in a collective unit. The big discrepancy in plus minus in this game reflects how the Celtics bench controlled the Bucks bench in both halves of the game. Both of the Celtics big runs occurred against the Bucks bench as well.

Poor shooting also played a significant role in this loss. The Bucks shot just 41% for the game and only scored 18 and 17 points in the second and third quarter respectively. While the offense was bad for most of the night, it also caused a drop in the Bucks defensive effort for portions of the game. The Bucks had problems getting back and matching up properly in transition. Also problems stopping the Celtics inside on direct drives to the basket. Lastly the Bucks defense struggled to get defensive rebounds and finish defensive possessions as the Celtics had 14 offensive rebounds on the night.OJ-MayoBucks

The Bucks lost this game for two reasons and both are reoccurring issues from last season. One, is lack of bench production and two is prolonged scoring droughts that also cause defensive efforts to slip. Efforts were made to address both of these issues in the off season but so far the people who were brought into address these issues have not performed well. Greivis Vasquez has struggled with his shot in the early going and OJ Mayo who was slated to provide some punch off the bench but he has not played a minute yet this season due to an injury.

Greg Monroe had 17 points and 14 rebounds but he had little help as the Greek Freak and Kris Middleton combined to shoot 9 for 25. The Bucks go back to back by playing at the Pepsi Center in Denver tonight.
