Five things we learned from the Premier League this Weekend

Sunderland in real trouble allardyce

Last week’s derby victory over Newcastle may have lifted the Black Cats off the foot of the table, but after their hiding at Everton they remain one of the favorites for relegation this season.

Despite fighting back from being 2-0 down to get back on level terms, Sunderland eventually lost 6-2, which leaves last week’s triumph in the distant past.

In fact, against the 10-man Magpies, Sunderland were outplayed, and the same was true for the majority of the game at Goodison Park this Sunday.

Conceding a half-dozen goals on Merseyside means Big Sam’s men now have the worst defense in the league and face in form Southampton next.

But Sunderland are used to looking like relegation fodder early on in campaigns before pulling off the great escape, however at the moment that looks very unlikely.

Villa on Garde garde d

Another side struggling at the foot of the table is Aston Villa, who announced on Monday that Remi Garde would become their new manager.

Garde watched on from the stands as his new side put in another abject performance against Tottenham, eventually going down 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

It looks like it will be a tricky start at Villa for Garde, with table-topping Manchester City visiting Villa Park this Sunday.

With only 10 goals scored in 11 matches, Garde will look to Scott Sinclair and Rudy Gestede for a supply of goals to keep Villa in the Premier League and while they showed glimpses of ability against Spurs, Garde may well need to splash the cash come January.

Bad to worse at Chelsea jose-mourinho_1583866c

Where to start with the current Chelsea crisis? Well, another home defeat – this time 3-1 against Liverpool- has left the defending champions languishing in 15th place in the table.

Off the field things are pretty grim too, with former club doctor Eva Carneiro, who is already suing the club for constructive dismissal, also pursuing a legal claim against manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has also been hit with a $40,000 fine and a one-match stadium ban following an altercation with referee Jon Moss in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, Lucas Piazon, who the club had sent out on loan, is wanted by police in Canada.

And you thought you were having a tough time…

Top of the Klopps klopppp

On the flip side of the result at Stamford Bridge was Jurgen Klopp, who is yet to taste defeat since taking over at Liverpool last month.

In fact the Reds are now only four points off the Champions League places, despite winning just three of their last 10 league games.

Klopp has also overseen progress in the League Cup and the performance at Stamford Bridge on Saturday certainly suggests that there may be more to come from Klopp’s side before the end of the season.

However, the likable German rebuffed the suggestion that Liverpool would win the title this season, saying: “Are you crazy? You think after one win at Chelsea we should think about this?,” when asked about his team’s title aspirations.

“We don’t think about this. We have to think about the next game, about improving our game and our style. We can do much better than today.”

Cherries losing flavor howe

Newly-promoted Bournemouth’s honeymoon period with the Premier League appears to be over, as they suffered a third straight defeat, this time to South Coast rivals Southampton on Sunday.

The Saints grabbed the three points with the minimum of fuss as Eddie Howe’s men fell to their fourth loss in five league games, leaving them one place above the relegation zone.

A serious injury to in-form striker Callum Wilson was always likely to be a massive hit to the Cherries’ survival aspirations, but it’s at the other end where the damage is being done – 12 goals have been leaked in their last three games.

With trips to Swansea and Chelsea coming up in November, and a home game with Everton unlikely to yield Howe’s side many points, next week’s home fixture with Newcastle is already beginning to look like a ‘must win.’
