The 49ers Bench 1 & trade 1

colin20kaepernick207-prk-0397342The 49ers have gone two straight games without a touchdown. Colin Kaepernick has been bad most of the season, missing easy throws and seemingly losing any confidence he had built up during his first two seasons as the 49ers starter, when they were one of the best teams in football. Kaepernick had a career-worst 78.8 rating this season. Gabbert, a failed first-round pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars, has had a terrible NFL career, but the 49ers couldn’t have figured there was much to lose. Perhaps Gabbert can at least run the basic plays that the 49ers need to execute to be a competent offense.

The question now is what becomes of Kaepernick beyond this season. The 49ers gave Kaepernick a contract that had a total value of $126 million but they could get out of easily if he regressed badly. And he has. Kaepernick is due $16.7 million next season and $19.3 million the season after that. If he’s cut before April 1, the 49ers could cut him at a salary-cap savings of $6.9 million next year. And if you’ve been benched for Gabbert, the odds of a team paying you $16.7 million next season don’t appear to be that great.

The 49ers were busy on Monday as they also traded long time tight end Vernon Davis to the 7-0 Denver Broncos. Vernon+Davis+Colin+Kaepernick+Super+Bowl+XLVII+La-ji-t4iFfl

”On behalf of the entire 49ers organization, I would like to thank Vernon for his decade of contributions to this team and our community,” 49ers GM Trent Baalke said in a statement. ”Not only has he contributed to some of the most memorable moments in franchise history, but he has also positively impacted the lives of many others through his efforts in the community. We wish Vernon and his family continued success in both football and life.”

Davis has 18 catches for 194 yards this season and is coming off a season-high six receptions Sunday in a loss at St. Louis. He was a popular player in the Bay Area.Davis-heroics-lead-49ers-past-Saints-GCRCOGC-x-large

A sixth-round pick out of Maryland in 2006, Davis had 441 catches for 5,640 yards and 55 TDs for the 49ers. He added 27 catches for 600 yards and seven TDs in eight playoff games. His seven playoff TDs are tied for first among tight ends in NFL history.

”I have great feelings for Vernon and everything he’s accomplished here,” 49ers coach Jim Tomsula said on KNBR radio. ”He’s a good man. We wish him nothing but success.”

The 49ers will get sixth-round picks in 2016 and 2017 and the Broncos also receive a seventh-round pick in 2016. If Davis, who’s due about $2.3 million on the final year of his contract, can quickly adapt to Gary Kubiak’s offense and finish strong, the Broncos could also get a compensatory draft pick if Davis leaves after the season and signs elsewhere.

”Thank you (at)49ers for 10 amazing years. Its been a blessing to play for such an incredible organization,” Davis posted Monday night on Twitter. ”Shout out to all of the coaches, staff, and teammates that made this chapter a very special one in my life. Most of all, a very special thank you to the (hash)49erfaithful family.”
